International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts have in recent days continued to inspect parts of Ukraine’s Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP), without seeing any mines or explosives. They are still waiting to gain the necessary access to the rooftops of reactor units 3 & 4 following recent reports that explosives may have been placed there, Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said, adding that the nuclear safety and security situation remains very precarious.

Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a decree to transfer Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to Russian control and oversight on Wednesday. But Ukraine calls it an illegal attempt to take control of the plant and says the Russian president’s decree is "null and void".

The site of Ukraine’s Zaporozhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) was hit by new shelling and explosions this week, breaking windows in one of its turbine halls and once again underlining the urgent need to establish a nuclear safety and security protection zone around the plant, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said on 27 September.

Energy commissioner calls for Russia to withdraw from site ‘without delay’ Russian forces captured the Zaporizhzhia facility in early March but it is still run by Ukrainian technicians. Image courtesy Energoatom. Europe’s energy commissioner Kadri Simson has joined condemnation of shelling at and around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, Europe’s largest commercial nuclear power facility, which she said has “caused significant damage to infrastructure, including near the dry storage of spent nuclear fuel within the nuclear power plant perimeter”.

“This reckless behaviour by the Russian military forces poses a great danger to the plant’s safe operation increasing significantly the risk of a nuclear accident and must not happen again,” Simson said in a statement.

While information obtained from the EU’s radioactivity monitoring systems and international sources does not indicate any increase of radioactivity in Ukraine or the EU nor any immediate radiation threat, military activities around nuclear power plants are “unacceptably dangerous”, Simson said. “The EU calls on Russia to ensure that repair works can be rapidly implemented and that the safety of the workers involved in them and in the operation of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station is guaranteed.”

The BN-800 sodium-cooled fast reactor at unit 4 of Russia’s Beloyarsk NPP began operating at 100% capacity for the first time on 17 August. Comprehensive testing of the unit at its rated power will be undertaken over 15 days as the final condition in preparation for commercial operation and before nuclear utility Rosenergoatom can receive permission from the nuclear regulator Rostechnadzor to operate the reactor commercially. This is scheduled for late autumn. Since the beginning of this year, as power was gradually increased, Beloyarsk 4 has generated more than 1.3TWh of electricity. It is expected to produce 3.5TWh during the whole of 2016.
