The site of Ukraine’s Zaporozhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) was hit by new shelling and explosions this week, breaking windows in one of its turbine halls and once again underlining the urgent need to establish a nuclear safety and security protection zone around the plant, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said on 27 September.

In July, US-based Westinghouse Electric Company and Bechtel Corporation announced the start of the study, which will provide Poland’s Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) – the company responsible for managing the country’s first nuclear power project – with layout plans for the location of a first nuclear power station, together with a licensing plan, project schedule and cost estimate.
The US Trade and Development Agency has released a grant to fund the study.
“US industry and government have come together at a critical juncture in the development of Poland’s nuclear energy programme,” Ms Granholm said during a press conference in Warsaw.

With 44 days to go until the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, leaders from ten nations plus the European Commission, European Council and United Nations last week joined US President Joe Biden in a closed-door forum at which they underscored the urgency of strengthening climate ambition ahead of COP26 and beyond. The USA and the EU also announced a Global Methane Pledge to cut global methane pollution by at least 30% from 2020 levels by 2030 through collective action.

The US-led Leaders’ Summit on Climate, held on 22 and 23 April as a video conference, attracted 40 world leaders (presidents and prime ministers) including Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Also taking part were some 24 other speakers at ministerial level (environment, defence, economy) in addition to Pope Francis and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, as well as almost 40 heads of environmental organisations, indigenous communities and leading businessmen, including Bill Gates. The event coincided with Earth Day, an annual event first held in 1970.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken yesterday called on heads of state to put their political differences to one side and make a collective effort to tackle global warming. Blinken moderated the first session of the Leaders Summit on Climate, which included Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Tim Yeo, chairman of the UK-based New Nuclear Watch Institute, said the nuclear energy industry must play a key part in this transition. “The world cannot completely replace fossil fuels by improving energy efficiency and expanding renewables alone,” he said.
Mr Yeo said nuclear has long been recognised as a reliable, efficient, and affordable supplier of low carbon baseload electricity. “No advanced economy can survive without this supply. This recognition has just been strengthened by a ringing endorsement for nuclear power from a new quarter.”
Mr Yeo pointed out that the European commission’s Joint Research Centre this month confirmed that the latest nuclear reactors have lower accident fatality rates than all electricity generation technologies.

A second round of talks in Vienna on Iran's nuclear programme on 17 April were reported to have made progress, despite Iran’s announcement that it was increasing uranium-enrichment levels to 60%. Under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) between Iran the P5+1 group of countries (the USA, UK, France, Russia, and China plus Germany) Iran agreed to limit its nuclear development in return for the lifting of sanctions. Under the JCPOA, Iran had committed to keep enrichment to 3.67%. However, after former US President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal and reimposed sanctions in 2018, Iran began reviving its nuclear programme and had increased its enrichment level to 20% in January. Following an attack on its Natanz enrichment facility, widely believed to have been perpetrated by Israel, Iran informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that enrichment levels would be increased to 60%.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Saeed Khatibzadeh, says "the time is not ripe" for an unofficial meeting proposed by Josep Borrell, EU foreign affairs chief and coordinator of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA). His statement follows Iran's commencement last week of restrictions on some site inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The E3 - France, Germany and the UK - has welcomed the prospect of a US and Iranian return to compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA). The E3 foreign ministers and the US secretary of state held a virtual meeting yesterday to discuss Iran and other pressing issues. It was the second time in this format since Secretary Antony Blinken took office.
