Utility Georgia Power has ordered the first nuclear fuel load for the Vogtle-4 nuclear power plant under construction in the US state of Georgia, completing the initial fuel order needed to operate the first newly designed reactors in the US in 30 years.
Fuel for Unit 3 was ordered last summer and completing the fuel order for Unit 4 marks another significant milestone at the Vogtle project, the company said.
The fuel, consisting of 157 fuel assemblies, will eventually be loaded into the reactor vessels to support startup once the reactors begin operating. After the initial fuelling, about one third of the total fuel assemblies will be replaced during each refuelling outage after the units begin operating, similar to the process used at existing Vogtle units 1 and 2.
Georgia Power also said workers have installed 10 of the 16 shield building courses of panels that surround the Unit 4 containment vessel. The shield building is a unique feature of the AP1000 reactor design for Vogtle-3 -4, providing an additional layer of safety around the containment vessel and nuclear reactor to protect the structure from any potential impacts.

Work on the two-unit Vogtle nuclear station construction project in the US state of Georgia is on schedule to meet revised targets of commercial operation in November 2021 and November 2022, Stephen Kuczynski, president of Southern Nuclear, said.
Mr Kuczynski told a Public Service Commission hearing on Tuesday that he is optimistic the project will be completed on time.
“We continue to work to our aggressive schedule. We feel that is still achievable,” Mr Kuczynski said. “It is a challenge, but achievable.”
Both units were supposed to be up and running by now, but Georgia Power and state regulators agreed to a new deadline, to have Unit 3 in operation in November 2021, and Unit 4 in November 2022.

Fuel loading has begun at Darlington 2, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has announced. The refurbishment of Darlington 3 is now expected to start in the second quarter of 2020 as the company applies lessons learned during the refurbishment of unit 2.

The final stages of construction work on Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington-2 refurbishment project, involving the installation of lower feeders, are well under way, although the plant will now return to service by June 2020 rather than February 2020 as previously anticipated.
OPG said the potential four-month delay to the return to service of Unit 2 is a result of delays related to fabrication and installation of feeder tube components. The fabrication delays resulted in upper, middle and lower feeders being installed at the same time, creating logistical and physical challenges with overlapping work.
The impact of the Unit 2 fabrication delays has been fully resolved and will not affect future units, OPG said.
“The refurbishment of Unit 2 remains on budget and the overall budget and schedule for the 10-year refurbishment project also remains on track,” it said.
