Published today, ahead of the 10th anniversary of the disaster, the report summarises the circumstances of the accident, the current status of the site, and lessons learned. It also considers the challenges that lie ahead and makes policy recommendations.

The expected completion of the reprocessing plant at Rokkasho in Japan's Aomori Prefecture has been put back again, to the first-half of FY2022 (ending March 2023), owing to the implementation of safety measures at the plant, including construction of a new cooling tower, Japan Nuclear Fuel Limited (JNFL) has announced.

Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) today approved a draft report concluding Japan Nuclear Fuel Limited's (JNFL's) reprocessing plant at Rokkasho in Aomori Prefecture meets new safety standards. The approval brings the plant, construction of which began in 1993, closer to starting up.

Hitachi Ltd Toshiaki Higashihara CEO said on 3 November that Japan should consider a merger of domestic nuclear reactor businesses as the prospects for restarting NPPs in Japan are poor. "As a company involved in the nuclear power business over decades, we can't afford to keep the business unprofitable forever," he told reporters.

Japan is turning to international experts for help with decommissioning its nuclear power plants. Kirill Komarov, first deputy director general for development and international business at Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom said on 26 November that Rosatom is ready to offer Japan the entire spectrum of services and technologies in the back-end of nuclear fuel cycle.
