The removal of melted fuel rods from the Fukushima Daiichi NPP destroyed by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami will be deferred until around October, Tokyo Electric Power Co. Holdings (Tepco) said, citing delays in completing a robot arm for the task.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has been selected as the core company in charge of the conceptual design of a demonstration fast reactor which the government aims to put into operation in the 2040s. MHI will oversee both the conceptual design as well as research and development for a sodium-cooled fast reactor in partnership with Mitsubishi FBR Systems (MFBR), an MHI Group engineering company established in 2007 to handle the development and design of fast reactors. The design work for the new reactor is scheduled to begin in fiscal 2024.

Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (Tepco) says it will have to delay to late 2023 the removal of melted nuclear fuel debris from the unit 2 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi NPP while adjustments are made to the robotic arms which will undertake the work. Tepco had initially planned to start the debris removal on a trial basis in 2021 but postponed it to 2022 in face of the coronavirus pandemic.

US-based Jacobs said on has designed and built a robotic tool to obtain crucial information about the state of a damaged nuclear power reactor at Fukushima Daiichi in Japan. The remotely operated device will collect pebble-like debris that was deposited at the bottom of the reactor containment vessel after the meltdown caused by the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

France's Orano Group announced that it has signed a cooperation agreement with Japan's Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) to strengthen their cooperation on the decommissioning of nuclear facilities at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant site. The agreement was signed on 11 September.

Hitachi Ltd Toshiaki Higashihara CEO said on 3 November that Japan should consider a merger of domestic nuclear reactor businesses as the prospects for restarting NPPs in Japan are poor. "As a company involved in the nuclear power business over decades, we can't afford to keep the business unprofitable forever," he told reporters.
