Recyclable-Fuel Storage Company Ltd (RFS) now expects its interim used fuel storage facility in Mutsu, Aomori prefecture, to begin operating in fiscal year 2023 (ending March 2024). Following several previous delays, the facility - construction of which began in 2010 - had been scheduled to start up later this year. However, the construction of additional safety measures is taking longer than expected.

Hitachi Ltd Toshiaki Higashihara CEO said on 3 November that Japan should consider a merger of domestic nuclear reactor businesses as the prospects for restarting NPPs in Japan are poor. "As a company involved in the nuclear power business over decades, we can't afford to keep the business unprofitable forever," he told reporters.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency announced on 10 January that it has developed a new system that can be used to calculate and visualise the reduction in the air dose rate following decontamination. It also plans an experiment to melt a section of a nuclear fuel rod, in a bid to further analyse the Fukushima accident.
