World leaders gathered in Brussels at the first ever Nuclear Energy Summit co-chaired by the Prime Minister of Belgium Alexander De Croo and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi. The Summit was the highest-level meeting to date exclusively focused on the topic of nuclear energy. It followed inclusion of nuclear energy in the Global Stocktake agreed at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai in December 2023 and the launch of the IAEA’s Atoms4NetZero initiative.

The Czech government has decided to change its tender for new nuclear to binding offers for up to four, rather than one, reactors - and said that it is inviting bids from France's EDF and South Korea's KHNP. The third bidder, Westinghouse, is currently not being included because it "did not meet the necessary conditions".

Czech power utility CEZ Group's Elektrárna Dukovany II (EDU II), a wholly owned subsidiary has received three final bids for the construction of a new unit at the Dukovany NPP. US-based Westinghouse, France’s EDF and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) submitted binding bids for Dukovany 5 and non-binding bids for the other three units. Westinghouse is proposing its AP1000, KHNP its APR1000 based in the APR1400 and EDF its EPR1200 (a smaller version of its standard EPR). These are all pressurised water reactors. Russia and China were excluded from the bidding in 2021.

Holtec International has concluded a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Czech Republic’s Škoda Praha and South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering and Construction (HDEC) to advance the planning for construction of SMR-160s in the Czech Republic. The SMR-160 is a small modular pressurised light-water reactor, generating 160MWe (525MWt) using low-enriched uranium fuel, with flexibility to produce process heat for industrial applications and hydrogen production.

South Korean Trade, Industry and Energy Minister Lee Chang-yang has visited Poland to discuss nuclear power, defence and high-tech bilateral collaboration. This followed South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol’s meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda at the NATO summit in Madrid where he promoted Korea’s nuclear technology. South Korea's new Yoon Suk-yeol government has been actively pushing to revive its nuclear energy industry, reversing the former government's nuclear phase-out policy.

EDF said the agreements were signed with key Czech companies active in the nuclear field: BAEST Machines & Structures, I&C Energo, Hutní Montáže, Mico Group, MSA, Sigma, Škoda, ÚJV Řež, Reko Praha and Zat. EDF said it is looking forward to delivering a European project supported by a qualified Czech and European supply chain.
Czech state power company ČEZ has said it is planning to build one Generation III+ reactor at the Dukovany site, with a maximum installed capacity of 1,200 MW. However, the company filed for permission to build up to two new units.
