The Sino-French TAC-1 consortium - led by China National Nuclear Corporation subsidiary China Nuclear Power Engineering and including Framatome - has been awarded a contract to assemble the vacuum chamber modules of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), under construction in Cadarache, southern France.

Global nuclear power generation is forecast to grow by almost 3% annually on average through to 2026, reaching a new record high by 2025, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). More than half of new reactors expected to become operational during the outlook period are in China and India.

US-based NuScale Power has joined the Romanian Atomic Forum (Romatom) as a supporting member to champion the association’s nuclear energy goals. Romania aims to be the first country in Europe to deploy a NuScale VOYGR small modular reactor (SMR) power plant. John Hopkins, NuScale President & CEO, said NuScale was “committed to advancing the secure deployment of SMRs globally”.

Funding of up to USD275 million to advance the deployment of a NuScale Power Corporation VOYGR small modular reactor (SMR) plant in Romania was announced at the G7 leaders' summit by the USA and "multinational public-private partners" from Japan, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates.

Italy is a steadfast partner in the challenges facing the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) today with a long history of achievements in the nuclear field, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi commented, as he travelled to Rome. During his two-day visit, Grossi met with Italy’s President and Foreign Minister, as well as with Pope Francis. Discussions covered a variety of issues including nuclear safety and security in Ukraine, nuclear non-proliferation, and the role of nuclear science and technology in combating climate change.

Dr Bernard Bigot, Director-General of the Iter Organisation passed away on 14 May “due to illness”. Iter said he was “an inspirational leader for more than four decades across multiple fields of science and energy” and that his personal dedication and commitment to Iter over the past seven years shaped every aspect of the project”. Iter added: “While his untimely passing will be felt as a tragic blow to the global fusion community, Dr Bigot’s careful design and preparation of the Iter senior management team in recent years gives reassurance of the project’s continued success.”

Samsung C&T and NuScale’s lead engineering, construction and procurement partner, Fluor Corporation, are also developing a business collaboration agreement to expand capabilities for future deployment of NuScale projects.
Under its agreements with NuScale and Fluor, Samsung C&T will draw upon its nuclear construction experience with the Barakah nuclear station in the United Arab Emirates and the Uljin station in South Korea, where it worked on Units 5 and 6, to serve as a partner to Fluor and other potential project participants.
John Hopkins, NuScale Power chairman and chief executive officer, said Samsung C&T’s expertise and investment in NuScale will be invaluable “as we seek to bring this revolutionary clean energy technology to market”.
