Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for technical cooperation in the field of used nuclear fuel to secure technologies for dry storage of used fuel and decommissioning of NPPs.

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) plan to leverage data gathered through decades of experience of the storage of used Candu fuel to underpin cooperative research activities under a new Memorandum of Understanding between the two organisations. They will engage in knowledge-sharing and other joint activities to advance storage, transportation and disposal practices for used fuel, and to explore opportunities to collaborate on nuclear decommissioning and waste management initiatives.

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) said on 30 March that its Centre for Canadian Nuclear Sustainability (CCNS) has joined forces with Moltex Energy in a project aimed at recycling used fuel from Candu reactors. CCNS will provide CAD1 million ($795,000) in funding to assist Moltex in demonstrating the technical viability of a new process to recycle used Candu fuel.

Ontario Power Generation's (OPG) Centre for Canadian Nuclear Sustainability (CCNS) and Moltex Energy are to collaborate on a project to demonstrate the technical viability of recycling used fuel from Candu reactors. OPG is providing CAD1 million (USD800,000) in funding for the project.

The Wolsong nuclear power station in South Korea. Courtesy KHNP. South Korea said it is going ahead with plans to build additional storage for spent nuclear fuel at one of its nuclear power stations after local residents living around the facility gave consent.

The move came after the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held talks with people living near the Wolsong nuclear power station, about 370 km southeast of Seoul, from April to July.

An onsite dry storage facility has been in operation for the four Candu pressurised heavy water reactors at Wolsong. Dry storage in modular air-cooled canister storage (Macstor) modules is used for the fuel after six years of cooling in pools.

Seven Macstor modules with a capacity of 168,000 bundles were constructed in 2010. Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power applied in April 2016 to add a further seven Macstor modules at Wolsong.

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) has entered into a collaboration agreement with UK-based Moltex Energy. Funded through CNL's Canadian Nuclear Research Initiative (CNRI), the agreement includes work to support aspects of Moltex Energy’s nuclear fuel development programme for its Stable Salt Reactor, a 300 MWe small modular reactor (SMR) design.
