Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry and Ukraine Minister of Energy German Galushchenko, during the COP27 meeting in Egypt, have announced a Ukraine Clean Fuels from SMRs Pilot project that will demonstrate production of clean hydrogen and ammonia using small modular nuclear reactor (SMR) and electrolysis technologies in Ukraine.

Denmark’s Seaborg has said it was one of only 74 innovative European companies selected from over 1,000 proposals to be awarded a grant by the European Innovation Council (EIC) so far in 2022. The EIC is Europe’s flagship innovation programme, with a budget of €10.1 billion, to identify, develop and scale up breakthrough technologies and game changing innovations across all EU member states. The EIC Accelerator provides financial support and business acceleration services to companies. The selected companies will each receive grants and/or equity investments, depending on their needs, up to €17.5 million.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) in its latest World Energy Outlook (WEO), published on 13 October, says transition to a clean energy system is progressing too slowly for the world to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. However, the report provides analysis of how the world can still move towards a pathway that would have a good chance of limiting global warming to 1.5°C but sees no key role for nuclear power.
