Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has signed a consortium agreement with Romanian nuclear utility Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica (SNN), Canada’s Candu Energy and Italy’s Ansaldo Nucleare, to jointly support refurbishment of unit 1 at Romania’s Cernavoda NPP. The refurbishment will extend the operational life of the reactor, which was commissioned in 1996. The 700 MWe Candu-6 has a design life of 30 years and the current operating licence is set to expire by the end of 2026.

Canadian construction and infrastructure development company Aecon Group has announced a partnership with ES Fox Limited to support innovative modular fabrication for the delivery of a grid-scale small modular reactor (SMR). The SMR is part of Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG’s) Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP), for which Aecon provides all construction services, including project management, construction planning and execution. Establishment of the supply chain partnership was marked during an event held at ES Fox’s fabrication facility in Port Robinson, Ontario.

Canada’s Bruce Power has awarded a CAD1.3bn ($1bn) contract to Shoreline Power Group for Fuel Channel and Feeder Replacement (FCFR) for its remaining Major Component Replacement (MCR) projects. These will involve Bruce Power NPP units 4, 5, 7 & 8.

Bruce Power has awarded a CAD1.3 billion (USD1 billion) contract for fuel channel and feeder replacement (FCFR) for its remaining four Major Component Replacement (MCR) projects to Shoreline Power Group. The announcement comes as fuel loading begins at Bruce unit 6 ahead of that unit's planned return to service on completion of its MCR.

Italy’s Ansaldo Nucleare has signed a contract with Canada’s SNC-Lavalin to supply engineering services to support the plant life extension of unit 1 of Romania’s Cernavoda NPP. This is part of the €45m ($48m) modernisation project awarded by Romanian nuclear utility Nuclearelectrica to SNC-Lavalin.

Romanian nuclear utility SN Nuclearelectrica (SNN) has selected Candu Energy (part of Canada’s SNC-Lavalin Group) to carry out additional pre-project work for the Candu reactor at unit 1 of the Cernavoda NPP. This is in preparation for extending its operating life. As part of a $65m two-year agreement, SNC-Lavalin will perform long-term engineering and front-end engineering services to prepare the future refurbishment project at Cernavoda 1, which will extend its service life by another 30 years to 2060.
