Carbon dioxide emissions from the USA's 100 largest power producers fell 10% between 2019 and 2020, according to the latest in a series of benchmarking studies dating back to 1997. Nuclear accounted for over half of the zero-carbon resources which together generated about 38% of US electricity in 2020.

The USA will need its existing nuclear power plants to help meet the Biden Administration's net zero by 2035 pledge, White House National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy said yesterday during a webinar held by Columbia University Centre on Global Energy Policy. Last month, President Joe Biden announced a target to cut US emissions by 50%-52% from 2005 levels by 2030.

California's last nuclear plant, Pacific Gas and Electric’s (PG&E’s) Diablo Canyon plant in San Luis Obispo County, will close in 2025, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) said on 11 January. The CPUC's five commissioners unanimously approved a revised version of the joint proposal for Diablo Canyon's closure that was put forward by PG&E together with labour and environmental organisations.
