Physical protection measures at Japan's seven-unit Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant have been significantly strengthened over recent years, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency. The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant in Japan's Niigata Prefecture will not be restarted until fiscal 2022 (ending March 2023) at the earliest, Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) said in a revised business plan. The company submitted the plan yesterday to the government for approval. Tepco is awaiting regulatory approval to restart units 6 and 7 at the plant.

Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco) said on 7 April that it will accept a penalty imposed by the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) over inadequate anti-terrorism measures at its Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant in Niigata Prefecture. This will prevent restart of the facility for at least a year. Tepco made the announcement in response to a decision by NRA in late March banniing it from moving any nuclear materials at unit 7 of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant.
