Restarting uranium mining in Western Australia could create up to 9000 jobs and produce uranium worth more than AUD1 billion a year, a 12-month inquiry by the state's Chamber of Commerce and Industry has found. It recommends that the state overturn its ban on uranium mining to unlock significant economic benefits.

Canada’s Cameco has announced that acquisition of?Westinghouse Electric Company in a strategic partnership with Brookfield Asset Management alongside Brookfield Renewable Partners and institutional partners has been completed. Cameco now owns a 49% interest and Brookfield a 51% in Westinghouse.

Cameco Corporation and Brookfield Renewable Partners, together with its institutional partners (the consortium), are forming a strategic partnership to acquire Westinghouse Electric Company. Brookfield Renewable, with its institutional partners, will own a 51% interest in Westinghouse and Cameco will own 49%.

Following the agreement, Cameco’s interest in the Cigar Lake Joint Venture company, which owns Cigar Lake, will increase by just over 4.5 percentage points to around 54.5%. Orano’s stake will increase by 3.3 percentage points to just over 40%. The remaining shareholder, Japan’s Tepco Resources, a Canada-based subsidiary of Tokyo Electric Power Company, will retain its 5% interest.
Cameco will pay approximately CAD107m ($82m, €78m) to acquire the stake in Cigar Lake from Idemitsu. This may be adjusted at the closing of the transaction, which is expected in the second quarter of 2022.

The global uranium market has not yet been impacted by recent geopolitical events, speakers from uranium suppliers said during a session of the World Nuclear Fuel Conference 2022 in London. The European Union (EU) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have extended a 2013 agreement to cooperate on nuclear safety. Their cooperation has already led to over one hundred nuclear safety review missions, environmental remediation at former uranium sites in Central Asia and more effective radioactive waste management in Africa.

Jordan has been operating a "pioneering" processing plant to recover yellowcake from uranium ores since the start of the year, the head of the country's Atomic Energy Commission has announced. Khaled Toukan's remarks were reported by state news agency Petra and shared by the Jordanian Uranium Mining Company (JUMCO), operator of the plant. JUMCO, which is the commercial arm of Jordanian Atomic Energy Commission, was established in 2013 to carry out radioactive elements exploration and development in Jordan.
