Kazakhstan’s national atomic company Kazatomprom has reported a slight year-on-year increase in its first quarter uranium production. Production for the quarter was 5077 tU (100% basis), up from 4744 tU for the same period in 2023, a year-on-year increase of 7%. However, Kazatomprom emphasised that its production guidance for 2024 of 21,000-22,500 tU (100% basis) remains unchanged while noting that "sanctions pressure due to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and limited access to some key materials are not known". As a result, “annual production volumes may differ from internal expectations".

Kazak President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, in a wide-ranging state-of-the nation has proposed holding a referendum on the issue of NPP construction or refusal to build a nuclear power plant to a national referendum. The Ministry of energy said that, together with interested state bodies, Deputies of Parliament, experts in this field, and public activists, it will consider all issues related to the implementation of the President's instructions, work out other aspects and inform the public about this work.

US-based nuclear fuel technology company Lightbridge Corporation has received a patent from the Eurasian Patent Office for its innovative nuclear fuel assemblies. This is a divisional patent and covers an all-metal fuel assembly design with a mixed grid fuel rod arrangement inside the fuel assembly.

India is engaging with various countries, including Uzbekistan, to procure uranium as part of its plan to create a strategic uranium reserve to ensure long-term security, PTi reported on 24 September. The plan is to have a stockpile of nuclear fuel for its strategic uranium reserve that can sustain India’s reactors for the next five years. Talks are currently being held with Uzbekistan, a senior government official said. An Uzbek delegation visited India in August to discuss the issue in detail. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier held bilateral talks with Uzbek president Shavkat Mirziyoyev on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Astana in June, PTI reported citing a senior Ministry of External Affairs official, on condition of anonymity.
