Addressing Atomexpo 2024 in Sochi, southern Russia, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó called for nuclear energy to remain a field of international cooperation, and expressed regret that the field was riddled with ideological debates. “As long as infrastructure determines energy cooperation, ideology should have nothing to do with [it],” he said. He added that, whereas nuclear energy had been “a victim of ideology” recently, Europe had “overcome” discrimination, “thanks mostly to the fact that France is a pro-nuclear country”. He added: “We were able to win our debates in Europe and make it recognised that generating electricity in a nuclear way is sustainable, safe and cheap.”

An extensive EU-funded research project has been launched to investigate the effects of chronic exposure to low doses of radon and other naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) on humans and the environment. The EUR22 million (USD26 million), five-year RadoNorm project involves 56 partners from 22 European countries.

Significant progress has been made in cleaning up some of the legacy waste from historic uranium mining in Central Asia, but much remains to be done, with additional donations from the international community needed to complete this vital remediation work, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) says.

The German government's plans to impose a tax on nuclear fuel have fallen at the first fence. The Hamburg Tax Court has rejected it as doubtful in terms of the country's constitution. One utility is to be refunded and nuclear fuel tax collections are to be suspended.
