Addressing Atomexpo 2024 in Sochi, southern Russia, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó called for nuclear energy to remain a field of international cooperation, and expressed regret that the field was riddled with ideological debates. “As long as infrastructure determines energy cooperation, ideology should have nothing to do with [it],” he said. He added that, whereas nuclear energy had been “a victim of ideology” recently, Europe had “overcome” discrimination, “thanks mostly to the fact that France is a pro-nuclear country”. He added: “We were able to win our debates in Europe and make it recognised that generating electricity in a nuclear way is sustainable, safe and cheap.”

Lithuania's State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (Vatesi) recently issued two licences to the Ignalina nuclear power plant (INPP) to start industrial operation of solid radioactive waste management and storage facilities. The urgent need to reduce emissions and slow global heating should involve the roll-out of more nuclear power stations, according to a new briefing released by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) on 11 August. In the run up to the COP 21 meeting in Glasgow, UNECE argues that nuclear power can help deliver on the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. UNECE, set up in 1947, is one of five regional commissions of the United Nations. Its main aim is to promote pan-European economic integration. UNECE includes 56 member states in Europe, North America, Central Asia and Western Asia.

The OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) on 18 July released a new study, “Ensuring the Adequacy of Funding Arrangements for Decommissioning and Radioactive Waste Management”. The 239-page document comprises a conceptual framework, 12 detailed country case studies on funding arrangements prepared in collaboration with NEA countries, and some best policy guidelines. It focuses on the interdependence of costs and funding requirements and changes in nuclear policy, such as long-term operation or premature shutdowns, as well as technological progress.

Ukraine's nuclear regulator has issued a permit to SSE Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP) for the retrieval of undamaged used nuclear fuel from the ISF-1 interim used fuel wet storage facility. The fuel will be moved into the new ISF-2 dry storage facility. The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU) has also issued a licence for the operation of the Liquid Radioactive Waste Treatment Plant at the Chernobyl site.
