US-based Bechtel has been selected by European enrichment services and fuel cycle company Urenco to support the expansion of its Tails Management Facility (TMF) at the Capenhurst site in the UK. The facility stores low concentration uranium tails for further use, or conversion to a chemically stable form for disposal. Urenco says the TMF will help enable the UK’s nuclear energy security strategy, which includes plans to deliver 24 GWe of new nuclear capacity by 2050, providing about a quarter of the domestic electricity supply. ?

Sellafield announced that it had packaged all foreign-owned wasted ready for return. The work is part of the closing out of commercial reprocessing contracts. Sellafield received used nuclear fuel from around the world to be reprocessed at its Thorp plant, generating £9 billion ($11.9bn) in revenue for the UK. Waste created during the process remains the property of overseas customers who are contractually obliged to take it back.

Work to prepare all foreign-owned high-level waste for return to overseas customers has been completed, the UK's Sellafield Ltd has announced. A total of 1840 containers have been prepared for return to overseas customers since 2008, as part of the closing out of commercial reprocessing contracts from the Thorp reprocessing plant.

A new specialist nuclear transport organisation has officially launched today in the UK. Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS), part of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), operates Direct Rail Services (DRS) and Pacific Nuclear Transport Limited (PNTL), which offer rail and shipping services, respectively. The NDA is also in the process of integrating its radioactive waste management businesses.

Decarbonising heat will be essential for global emissions reduction efforts in the coming years, Aiden Peakman of the UK Nuclear Innovation and Research Office told a high-level joint workshop held by the International Energy Agency and the International Atomic Energy Agency. Current generation light-water reactors and next-generation advanced reactors could significantly help in decarbonising the heat sector, he said.

The second and final shipment of high-level waste (HLW) from the UK to Switzerland was completed on 13 October. The waste came from used fuel from Swiss NPPs operated by utilities Axpo and BKW Energie. The fuel has been reprocessed at Sellafield's Thorp facility to reduce its volume and to recover fuel materials for recycling. It comprised four flasks, each with 28 containers of HLW in the form of vitrified residues.
