Joyce’s party, the National Party of Australia (NPA), has been a strong advocate for nuclear, arguing the technological advancements make it a viable, clean and reliable energy source as opposed to solar and wind.
Joyce told Sky News Australia several governments around the world, including the UK and France, had been successfully integrating the power source and suggested Australia should be next.
“If you want to get to zero emissions then listen to what they’re doing in the UK where they’re building new nuclear reactors, listen to what they’re doing in France, listen to what they’re doing in Asia,” he told First Edition host Pete Stefanovic.

Australia is to acquire nuclear submarines as the first initiative under a new enhanced trilateral security partnership announced by the leaders of Australia, the UK and the USA. The submarines are to be built in Australia, but the country is not seeking to acquire nuclear weapons or establish a civil nuclear capability, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said.

Following an 11-day mission to South Africa, an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) team said on 15 December that South Africa has a robust regulatory framework for nuclear safety but recommended improvements in the oversight of radiation safety.

South Australia Royal Commission into the Nuclear Fuel Cycle recommended, in its 344-page report published on 9 May, that South Australia should "further investigate" the feasibility of the storage and disposal of international used nuclear fuel and intermediate-level waste. The commission said South Australia has the attributes and capabilities to manage and dispose of international used nuclear fuel safely, and it would have a significant inter-generational benefit to the community.

The amount of nuclear-generated electricity in the OECD area declined by 5.2% between 2011 and 2012, according to a book of nuclear energy data published by the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency. Total electricity generation fell 0.1% over the same period.
