In the wake of Australia’s decision to purchase nuclear-powered submarines from the USA and UK, instead of diesel-powered vessels from France (the AUKUS defence pact), pressure is building up for Australia to consider developing nuclear power for energy production.

The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, (Ansto) said on 16 July that it will make an application to the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (Arpansa) to vary its licence for its Interim Waste Store. The original operating licence was approved in 2015, enabling the facility to hold what is called a TN-81 cask of intermediate-level radioactive waste that was repatriated from France in 2015.

The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation's (ANSTO) medical isotope production facility announced in January that it had become the second in the world to install a high-resolution monitoring system to track emissions from its medical radioisotopes production facility under an initiative led by the US Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).

ANSTO and PNNL said the detector system was installed in October at the medical isotope production facility at Lucas Heights. The first such system had been installed in a monitor stack at the Institute for Radioelements (IRE) at Fleurus in Belgium. Both IRE and ANSTO produce molybdenum-99 by irradiating uranium in a reactor. The process releases gaseous fission products including xenon isotopes. While representing no danger to the public, the isotopes resemble those produced by a nuclear explosion.

The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (Ansto) expects to begin full-scale production of molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) in 2017, producing 10m doses a year. Its AUD168m ($128m) investment programme is designed to take Australia from producing predominantly domestic supplies to around 25% of world demand. Ansto said on 5 August that, during the latest stage of work, 10 radiation-resistant hot cells are being delivered and installed by the end of November at the Ansto site at Lucas Heights, which is also the site of the Opal research reactor.
