Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation, the Seattle-based developer of microreactors, has opened its pilot fuel manufacturing facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

The facility will produce the first fuel for testing and qualification for use in Ultra Safe Nuclear’s advanced micro modular reactor (MMR) energy system, which the company says is “gaining traction” in the US and world markets.

The new facility uses the same production-scale modules for manufacturing Triso coated fuel particles and the company’s patented fully ceramic-microencapsulated (FCM) fuel that will go into Ultra Safe Nuclear’s future commercial fuel manufacturing facility.

The facility is capable of producing FCM for testing and qualification in multiple-kilogramme quantities, Ultra Safe Nuclear said. The facility will also codify and demonstrate the manufacturing modules that will be used in the company’s future commercial fuel manufacturing factory.

Russia and Argentina have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on uranium exploration and mining in the South American country. Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom is also proposing to supply Argentina with a nuclear power plant.

The first module Russia's Breakthrough (Proryv) project under development at the Siberian Chemical Combine (SCC) in Seversk will be completed in 2017. Russia has moved from the design phase of the Pilot Demonstration Power Complex (PDPC) with the fast neutron reactor BREST-OD-300 and on-site closed nuclear fuel cycle. The Breakthrough project will include facilities for fuel fabrication and fuel recycling, as well as the BREST-300 lead-cooled fast neutron reactor. Vyacheslav Pershukov, state nuclear corporation Rosatom's head of design and innovation, said that long-lead items had been ordered from SverdNIIkhimmash for fuel module fabrication and re-fabrication. Installation of the equipment of the fuel fabrication module will start in the autumn. Construction of the facility began in August 2014. Contracts to supply equipment for the reactor facility are at the tendering stage, Pershukov added.

A pre-construction design review of the Hitachi-GE ABWR in the UK has proceeded to the next phase. Following a preliminary phase that ended in January 2014, the reactor design completed an initial technical assessment in August. But there remains lots more work to do before final approval, tentatively scheduled for December 2017.

The oceans have been formed from countless storms and the flow of vast quantities of water and sludge. The Amazon alone pours out billions of tonnes of chemicals every year, including carcinogens such as beryllium, cadmium, nickel and uranium. The inventory of arsenic in the world’s waters, in particular, is several billion tonnes and this is a worse carcinogen in water than plutonium. Natural uranium and radium in the seas amount to around 5 billion and 34 million tonnes respectively. On land, in the top 500 metres of UK rocks there are nearly a billion tonnes of uranium and 300 tonnes of radium, which are being steadily leached into the sea. In coal-fired power, wastes have been casually spread in enormous heaps from mine spoil and coal refining; ‘fly’ ash from burning coal (containing uranium and its decay products) is collected in lagoons and made into blocks for building construction. Radioactive waste would therefore be an insignificant extra hazard if dispersed in the sea or on the land surface. However, international opposition on political grounds would probably cause a long delay before there was general agreement on such direct dumping.
