Kazakhstan’s Kazatomprom has signed its first commercial uranium fuel supply contract with the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), for the United Arab Emirates' Barakah nuclear power plant.

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Saudi Arabia is considering a Chinese proposal to build a NPP. Citing Saudi sources acquainted with the situation, WSJ said China National Nuclear Corp (SNNS) had submitted a bid to construct a nuclear plant in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, close to the border with Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Last week, Barakah-3 received an operating licence from the UAE nuclear regulatory authority which also meant fuel loading was given the go-ahead.
Barakah, in the Al Dhafra region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, is one of the largest nuclear energy new-build projects in the world, with four APR-1400 units supplied by South Korea. Construction began in 2012 and the project as a whole is now more than 96% complete.

Iraq is working on a plan to build nuclear reactors in face of widespread blackouts that have sparked social unrest, Bloomberg reported on 8 June. Despite being OPEC’s second biggest oil producer, Iraq is suffering from power shortages and insufficient investment in ageing plants, and needs to meet an expected 50% jump in demand by the end of the decade. The operation began on 15 March 2021 after the UAE nuclear regulator awarded an operating licence to Barkah-2 a week earlier.
Nawah said operators will now begin a process known as power ascension testing, in which Unit 2 systems are gradually tested at various power levels in order to move into full electricity production.
