US-based TerraPower has submitted its construction permit application to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the Natrium reactor demonstration project. This is the first application to NRC for construction of a commercial advanced reactor.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) released its Fiscal Year 2025 budget request, which includes nearly $1.59bn for the Office of Nuclear Energy (NE). This includes $694.2m in research and development activities “that will help advance important reactor and fuel technologies, address gaps in the domestic nuclear fuel supply chain, and harness the latest artificial intelligence and machine learning tools to optimise the performance of the nation’s fleet of reactors”.

US fuel technology company Lightbridge Corporation says it has achieved a critical milestone in developing its fuel after Idaho National Laboratory (INL) extruded coupon samples of Lightbridge Fuel material consisting of an alloy of depleted uranium and zirconium. The extrusion process involves pressing a metallic alloy billet through a die.

The Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) has published the second edition of its Small Modular Reactor Dashboard which tracks the progress of selected small modular reactor (SMR) designs towards deployment. NEA says the SMR designs are at various stages of development, from fundamental research on new concepts to commercial deployment and operation of mature designs.

US-based Oklo has signed an Option & Right of First Refusal to Purchase Real Estate (land rights agreement) with the non-profit Southern Ohio Diversification Initiative (SODI) for land including options for the siting of two powerhouses. This is an extension of Oklo and SODI’s May 2023 agreement for land to host two more of Oklo’s Aurora design fast neutron microreactors. Oklo received a site permit in December 2019 from the US Department of Energy (DOE) to build its first Aurora facility at Idaho National Laboratory (INL).

US-based NANO Nuclear Energy has announced that Idaho National Laboratory (INL) has completed a pre-conceptual design review of its ODIN low-pressure coolant microreactor design. The review was requested by NANO Nuclear to provide an external audit of the technical work completed to date on the microreactor. Nano said the review served to ensure that it had “thoroughly considered the necessary aspects of its design and the applicable regulations for advancing the technology towards a commercial product”.
