TerraPower and Centrus Energy Corp have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to significantly expand their collaboration aimed at establishing commercial-scale, US production capabilities for high-assay, low-enriched uranium (HALEU) to supply TerraPower's first-of-a-kind Natrium reactor and energy storage system.

US-based fission technology company Oklo is to merge with AltC. Oklo said in a statement it believed roughly 40% of the Fortune 500 companies are committed to an emissions-free future, with some $2 trillion expected for power generation alone. "Oklo is pursuing two complementary tracks to address this demand: providing reliable, commercial-scale energy to customers; and selling used nuclear fuel recycling services to the US market," the company said.

Plans to construct a Natrium reactor demonstration project at a retiring coal plant in the US state of Wyoming were announced yesterday by TerraPower, PacifiCorp and Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon. The companies are evaluating several potential locations in the state for the plant, which will feature a 345 MWe sodium-cooled fast reactor combined with a molten salt energy storage system that can boost the system's output to 500 MWe for more than five-and-a-half hours when needed. They expect to announce the selected site by the end of 2021.

TerraPower and GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) have announced the launch of the Natrium concept, which features a sodium fast reactor combined with a molten salt energy storage system that will allow over five hours of energy storage. The partners hope to commercialise the technology by the end of this decade.
