The Ontario government is supporting a plan by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) plan to proceed with refurbishing Pickering Nuclear Generating Station’s “B” units (units 5-8). Two of the four Pickering “A” units (2&3) were closed in 1997. Units 1&4 were refurbished but are now due to close by the end of this year. Pickering A began operation in the 1970s and Pickering B in the 1980s.

Unit 6 at Canada’s Bruce Power NPP has been reconnected to Ontario’s electricity grid following completion of its Major Component Replacement (MCR) outage, which began in January 2020. Bruce Power said the work was completed ahead of schedule and on budget despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is the first unit to be returned to service as part of Bruce Power’s Life-Extension Program, which will see Units 3-8 refurbished over the next decade, extending their operation period to 2064 and beyond.

The refurbished unit 3 of the Darlington nuclear power plant has been reconnected to the grid 169 days ahead of schedule, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) announced. Unit 3 is the second of four Candu units at the site to undergo refurbishment in a 10-year project that will enable the plant to continue operations until 2055.

Canada’s Ontario government has launched pre-development work to site the first large-scale nuclear newbuild in 30 years to meet rising electricity demand, power electrification and fuel economic growth. Bruce Power is to begin community consultations and conduct an environmental assessment for federal approval to determine the feasibility of siting up to 4800 MWe of new nuclear generation on its current site.
