US fuel technology company Lightbridge Corporation has engaged Romania’s Institutul de Cercetari Nucleare Pite?ti (ICN Pite?ti), a subsidiary of Regia Autonoma Tehnologii pentru Energia Nucleara (RATEN ICN) to undertake an engineering study to assess the suitability of Lightbridge Fuel for use in Candu reactors. This assessment will cover key areas including mechanical design, neutronics analysis, and thermal and thermal-hydraulic evaluations. The results will guide future economic evaluations and support potential regulatory licensing.

Chicago-based Clean Core Thorium Energy and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) are planning a pre-licensing review of the Clean Core’s advanced nuclear fuel. The ANEEL fuel design uses thorium and High-Assay, Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU). Clean Core says the pre-licensing review process will provide it with clear and early feedback on use of the ANEEL fuel design in a Candu reactor.

US-based Clean Core Thorium Energy has signed a partnership agreement with the US Department of Energy to pave the way for testing innovative fuel for nuclear power plants.

Clean Core said the agreement includes a schedule for irradiation and qualification testing for advanced thorium fuel at Idaho National Laboratory (INL).

The company said the move is “a major milestone” for the commercialisation of thorium-based energy.

Clean Core’s Aneel (“advanced nuclear energy for enriched life”) fuel technology uses a combination of thorium and high assay low-enriched uranium (Haleu) for a improved fuel performance in Candu reactors and in other pressurised heavy-water reactor (PHWR) designs.
