The Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) has recently published a 73-page study, which tracks the progress of selected small modular reactor (SMR) designs towards deployment. NEA says the SMR designs are at various stages of development, from fundamental research on new concepts to commercial deployment and operation of mature designs.

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) has announced that it has entered into a collaboration agreement with New Brunswick-based ARC Clean Energy Canada, which is working to develop and licence its sodium-cooled advanced small modular reactor (SMR) technology. The agreement, funded through CNL’s Canadian Nuclear Research Initiative (CNRI), includes work to advance the fuel development and manufacturing processes to produce fuel for ARC Canada’s technology.

Polish chemical producer Ciech will consider nuclear technologies to replace coal burnt for power and process heat in its plants. Ciech has signed a Letter of Intent to cooperate with Synthos Green Energy, which is already working with GE-Hitachi and Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation.

Teams led by TerraPower and X-energy have been announced as the recipients of USD160 million in initial funding under the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program (ARDP). The companies get USD80 million each to build a demonstration plant that can be operational within seven years.

Holtec International's SMR-160 reactor has completed the first phase of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC)'s vendor design review (VDR) process. The company plans to begin the second phase of the voluntary pre-licensing review in the near future.

US-based GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) and Advanced Reactor Concepts (ARC Nuclear) on 12 March signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate on the development and licensing of an advanced small modular reactor (SMR) based on Generation IV sodium-cooled fast reactor technology.
