The post-COVID economic recovery and the clean energy transition present a huge opportunity from which all nations can benefit, delegates at the IEA-COP26 Net Zero Summit agreed. Over 40 countries, covering more than 80% of global GDP, population and carbon emissions, took part in the event on 31 March to identify how to work together to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. They included the USA, which re-joined the 2015 climate accord earlier this year.

The UK, as host of the next round of UN climate talks, must take the opportunity to show how nuclear energy is essential to decarbonisation, Tim Stone, chairman of the Nuclear Industry Association, said at a Westminster Energy Forum conference last week. "In fact, I would go as far as to say: No nuclear? No net zero."

A decision on planning consent for the Wylfa Newydd nuclear power plant project on Anglesey has been deferred for a second time, as requested by Horizon Nuclear Power, the UK project developer owned by Japan’s Hitachi.
