New plants began operating, deals for small modular reactors were signed and countries announced ambitious plans for new-build.
On the political front, US president Joe Biden signed into law new legislation that will help to finance struggling nuclear reactors and could save dozens from being shut down early. In Europe, the nuclear industry celebrated when members of the European parliament decided to “follow the science” and support legislation which includes nuclear in the bloc’s sustainable finance taxonomy for green investment.

Minister of Energy Virgil Popescu says Canada and the USA are both offering to help with the financing of the construction of Cernavoda 3 and 4 and said the US firms Fluor Corporation and Sargent & Lundy, Canada's SNC Lavalin and France's Framatome had agreed to "explore opportunities for cooperation in the civil nuclear field" with Nuclearelectrica.

A campaign to move used highly enriched uranium (HEU) fuel from Canada to the USA, which began in 2015, has been completed a year ahead of schedule, the US Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) have announced.

Nuclear and renewable generation should be used in combination to make the most of their synergies in integrated systems to help the world meet carbon reduction goals and limit temperature rise, leaders from governmental and non-governmental organisations and industry said yesterday. With global interest in small modular reactors growing, US-based GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH), Global Nuclear Fuel (GNF), Holtec International and SMR Inventec have agreed to collaborate to advance the SMR-160, a single loop, 160MWe pressurised light water reactor based on existing light water technologies. GNF, a GE-led joint venture with Hitachi and Toshiba, is primarily known as a supplier of boiling water reactor fuel. SMR LLC is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Holtec established in 2011 to manage the development of the SMR-160.
