All realistic options that might contribute to global net-zero must be considered, the Generation IV International Forum (GIF) has said in an open letter to COP26 President Alok Sharma. Nuclear systems and advanced reactors - such as Generation IV systems - can contribute to a net-zero society alongside renewable energies, it says.

The US-led Leaders’ Summit on Climate, held on 22 and 23 April as a video conference, attracted 40 world leaders (presidents and prime ministers) including Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Also taking part were some 24 other speakers at ministerial level (environment, defence, economy) in addition to Pope Francis and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, as well as almost 40 heads of environmental organisations, indigenous communities and leading businessmen, including Bill Gates. The event coincided with Earth Day, an annual event first held in 1970.

The US Department of Energy has approved a cost-share award of more than USD1 billion for the construction of the first NuScale small modular reactor power plant in the USA. Meanwhile, the US International Development Finance Corporation has signed a Letter of Intent to support NuScale in the development of nuclear generating capacity in South Africa.

Uzbekistan's preparations to build its first nuclear power plant are gathering pace with a sense of making up for lost time. The Central Asian country became a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as long ago as 1994, has 50 years of experience in nuclear research and is the world's fifth biggest producer of uranium.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has marked the tenth anniversary of its Network on Environmental Remediation and Management (ENVIRONET) initiative by showcasing projects it has supported, lessons learned and plans to ensure future activities inside and outside the fuel cycle benefit from an integrated approach to remediation.

South Africa announced on 27 August that it had cancelled plans to incease its nuclear power capacity in favour of increasing the use of renewable sources as it tries to reduce its dependence on coal. The long-delayed update of South Africa’s Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) for power sector spending, the first in eight years, calls for a major increase in capacity from wind and natural gas. “There will be a study to determine if more nuclear is needed after 2030,” Energy Minister Jeff Radebe told reporters. “But until then, there is no increase in nuclear generation envisaged.” South Africa currently has one two-unit NPP operating at Koeburg.

The Tennessee Valley Authority's draft Integrated Resource Plan has suggested an increase in nuclear power, with the potential to eventually overtake coal as the leading electricity source in its southern USA spot. It said that it may idle some of its coal generation fleet as emissions standards tighten.
