The UK has opened for consultation its assessment of a new financing model aimed at reducing the cost of new nuclear power plant projects by having consumers pay upfront through their energy bills. A solution is needed urgently because nuclear energy is seen as a vital part of the government's commitment to cutting the country's carbon emissions to net zero by 2050. Seven of the UK’s eight existing nuclear plants are set to be retired by 2030.

The UK and the European Commission signed a contract extension today for the world’s largest fusion research facility, Joint European Torus (JET). The extension secures at least EUR100 million (USD112 million) in additional inward investment from the EU over the next two years and "brings reassurance" for the more than 500 staff at the site in Culham, near Oxford, the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) said.

The UK does not yet have new rules in place which will be needed to supply fuel for nuclear power plants after leaving the European Union (EU), according to Angela Hepworth, Electricite de France’s (EDF’s) EDF’s corporate policy and regulation director. There is very little time to replicate vital aspects of the European Atomic Energy Community treaty before Brexit in March 2019, she said on 19 February. “Having a hiatus isn’t an option. Having a time when the UK has no access to fuel isn’t an option.”

France's EDF said on 26 June that it was carrying out a "full review" of the costs and schedule of the Hinkley Point NPP project in the UK. EDF said "a full review of the costs and schedule of the Hinkley Point C project is in progress", as had already been indicated in the company's annual financial report. According to France's Le Monde, the "first conclusions" of the review pointed to building costs exceeding the €21bn ($23.5bn) budget by €1-3bn. The internal review  is also expected to confirm fears that the EDF will not be able to deliver Hinkley by 2025, with the  start-up date more likely to be 2027. The review, led by EDF audit director Jean-Michel Quilichini, is expected to be made public later this summer.

Following UK media reports questioning the future of UK's Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) and the Joint European Torus (JET) in the wake of the UK's expected withdrawal from the European Union (Brexit), CCFE head Ian Chapman said on 30 November that "nothing has changed". JET is the largest tokamak in the world and the only operational fusion experiment currently capable of producing fusion energy.
