A new facility to accelerate the use of robotics in the UK nuclear power industry was announced on 5 November, for both decommissioning and new builds. The contract, which will support robotics R&D from four UK locations, was published by the centre for Remote Applications in Challenging Environments (RACE), which is part of the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA).

Nuclear engineering company Assystem has been awarded a major, multi-discipline design framework agreement to support United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) fusion development, the company said on 5 November. Assystem will support the engineering design of projects across all major disciplines including mechanical engineering, process engineering, electrical, control and instrumentation, building services and civil engineering, and integrated design.

The UK government on 7 December announced several measures intended to support the development of next-generation nuclear technology. A key objective of the government’s Industrial Strategy white paper published in November was to "ensure the UK is developing the technologies of the future and preparing to seize the opportunities they bring and build on its strengths", the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) said. Business Secretary Greg Clark said the announcements recognise the importance of industry driving innovation, supported by the government, so the sector continues to compete at the very highest level, not just in the UK but globally.
