Chicago-based Clean Core Thorium Energy (CCTE) has completed Phase 1 of the pre-licensing Vendor Design Review (VDR) process with Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). No issues were identified by CNSC that could present a fundamental barrier to the licensing of Clean Core’s ANEEL fuel in Canada.

A new publication in the IAEA’s Technical Report Series, Status of Molten Salt Reactor Technology, outlines the current status of molten salt reactor (MSR) technology around the world. It reviews the history of MSRs and takes a look at the current research and development activities taking place. The advantages of this technology, including a smaller high level waste footprint and passive safety features, as well as some of the technical challenges, such as developing components capable of operating in very high temperature environments, are detailed.

US-based X-energy Reactor Company and Canadian power company TransAlta Corporation have announced a partnership to study deployment of X-energy’s Xe-100 small modular reactors (SMRs) in Alberta. The study will be supported through funding from Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) and will assess the feasibility of repurposing a fossil fuel electricity generation site for an Xe-100 plant.

US-based Global Laser Enrichment (GLE), jointly owned by Australia’s Silex Systems (51%) and Canada’s Cameco (49%), has decided against responding to a US Department of Energy (DOE) request for the acquisition of high-assay low-enriched uranium enrichment (HALEU), which is not currently commercially available from US-based suppliers.

Consolidated Uranium Inc has announced the start of "comprehensive" work programmes including the reopening of the underground workings at its 100%-owned Tony M uranium mine, fifteen years after it last produced uranium. The Vancouver-based company also plans to investigate the vanadium potential of the underground mine in Utah.

The company has released the full results of a feasibility study on in-situ leach (ISL) mining of the high-grade Phoenix uranium deposit and a cost update to its pre-feasibility study for conventional underground mining of the Gryphon uranium deposit. The deposits are part of the Wheeler River project in the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan, Canada.
