A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Framatome and Exelon Generation will see the two companies work towards the production of cobalt-60 (Co-60) in pressurised water reactors (PWRs) for medical and industrial uses.

Cobalt-60 is a radioisotope produced in nuclear reactors out of natural element Cobalt-59. It plays a critical role in healthcare applications such as sterilisation of medical devices and treatment of certain cancers.
Under the MOU, the two companies will cooperate on technology development and assess the feasibility and economics of Cobalt-60 production in PWR reactors for industrial and medical purposes as long-term demand continues to grow.
Exelon Generation operates the largest US fleet of nuclear plants with more than 18,700 MW from 21 reactors at 12 facilities in Illinois, Maryland, New York and Pennsylvania.

Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom announced today it has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with France's Framatome and GE Steam Power of the USA to participate in a tender to construct the Belene nuclear power plant in Bulgaria.

Making a commitment to build six new EPRs in France would be an "effective stimulus" for the country's economy as it recovers in the years ahead from the shock of COVID-19, the French nuclear energy society (SFEN) wrote in a position paper published this week. Nuclear energy "ticks all three boxes" highlighted in the debate about the recovery - that investments should be in low-carbon, resilient and sovereign industries, it said.

Indian design nuclear plants with 220MWe pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs) continue to set national and station records for the duration of continuous power operation the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) reported. As of 3 October, the duration of uninterrupted operation of Kaiga 1 reached 873 days, a new national record. The same day, Rajasthan 3 achieved 766 days, a new station record.
