The US has sensitive nuclear technology at a nuclear power plant inside Ukraine and is warning Russia not to touch it, according to a letter the US Department of Energy (DOE) sent to Rosatom, CNN reported. The letter, from the director of DOE’s Office of Nonproliferation Policy, Andrea Ferkile, was dated 17 March 2023. It tells Rosatom’s director general that the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Enerhodar “contains US-origin nuclear technical data that is export-controlled by the United States Government”.

Japan, the UK, Canada, the US and France have agreed to co-operate to reduce dependence on Russia as a supplier of nuclear materials and technology. Their statement was issued at the Nuclear Energy Forum being held in Japan’s Sapporo alongside the meeting of Group of Seven (G7) ministers on climate, energy and environment. It was published on the UK government website.

The use of Russian nuclear fuel is set to continue for several more years at Finland’s Loviisa Nuclear Power Plant, operated by Fortum, Finnish news agency STT has reported, citing Fortum’s director of nuclear power, Matti Kattainen. "We have a valid contract under which we work," Kattainen said.

Rosatom said on 8 September that it had taken part in the first pilot research exercises run by the Russian Ministry for Civil Defence, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters (Emercom). During the  “Safe Arctic” exercises, Rosatom demonstrated operation of a mobile laser complex (MLC) for elimination of accident consequences/ the MLC was designed by the Troitsk Institute of Innovative and Thermonuclear Research (Triniti - part of Rosatom’s scientific division, JSC Science and Innovations).

Making a commitment to build six new EPRs in France would be an "effective stimulus" for the country's economy as it recovers in the years ahead from the shock of COVID-19, the French nuclear energy society (SFEN) wrote in a position paper published this week. Nuclear energy "ticks all three boxes" highlighted in the debate about the recovery - that investments should be in low-carbon, resilient and sovereign industries, it said.

GE Steam Power expects "stable demand" for nuclear power generation over the next 10 years as "the only powerful source of electricity without carbon dioxide emissions", its CEO, Michael Keroullé, said in an interview this week with Strana Rosatom, the newspaper of the Russian state nuclear corporation.

Sergey Kiriyenko, director general of Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, told journalists at the International Forum ATOMEXPO 2016 in Moscow on 31 May that the 10-year portfolio of Rosatom's orders for construction of NPPs will increase in 2016. "At the end of 2015, the order portfolio was $110bn. The 2016 we plan to finish at $136bn," he said, adding that 34 Russian design NPP units were now under construction in different regions of the world. He added that the cumulative portfolio of orders, including construction of NPPs, fuel supplies, uranium products delivery, services etc., exceeded $300bn.
