The US reaffirmed its support for Indian membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) during the state visit to Washington of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A long joint statement comprising 58 paragraphs, by Modi and US President Joe Biden covered a wide range of subjects, with nuclear only mentioned in one (para 22). It said: “Prime Minister Modi underscored the important role nuclear energy plays in global decarbonisation efforts and affirmed nuclear energy as a necessary resource to meet our nations’ climate, energy transition, and energy security needs.”

Countries around the world turned to nuclear as a reliable low-carbon energy source as they looked for ways to wean themselves off Russian imports and lower carbon emissions.

India and the USA have extended their Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation on the Global Centre for Nuclear Energy Partnership (GCNEP) by 10 years. The centre - officially opened in 2017 - supports international cooperation in nuclear energy applications.

India has asked Japanese company Toshiba to offer ways to resolve the issue of sale of nuclear reactors following bankruptcy of its US-based Westinghouse Electric Company. The Westinghouse-Toshiba nuclear reactors deal for making six reactors was to be negotiated by June 2017 but that deadline is sure to fall through, the Financial Express reported on 2 May, citing Indian officials.

US President Barack Obama and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have announced that engineering and design work will begin on a site in India for Westinghouse Electric Company (part of Japan's Toshiba) to build six Generation III+ AP1000 pressurised water reactors. The deal is expected to be signed within a year, and would be the first contract under the US-India civil nuclear accord reached in 2008. The project is still arranging financing, with the support of the US Export-Import Bank. "Culminating a decade of partnership on civil nuclear issues, the leaders welcomed the start of preparatory work on-site in India for six AP 1000 reactors to be built by Westinghouse and noted the intention of India and the US Export-Import Bank to work together toward a competitive financing package for the project," the White House said in a statement.
