The UK Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and US Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) have completed the transfer of around 700kg of highly enriched uranium (HEU) from Dounreay, in northern Scotland, to the USA.

The UK Department of Energy & Climate Change has a problem with the world’s largest stocks of reactor-grade plutonium. The international association Environmentalists for Nuclear Energy view this as a one-time opportunity to benefit several advanced nuclear energy developments, none of which are acknowledged by DECC. The Joint Venture to develop new nuclear build at Sellafield, NW England, “NuGen,” has finally been established. Three companies - GDF Suez , Iberdrola and Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) – teamed together to buy 190 ha (470 acres) land at Sellafield from the NDA in 2009. The consortium paid an upfront payment of GBP19.5 million, with a further payment of at least GBP50.5 million to follow in the next six years.

Westinghouse Electric Company has opened a new European Pump and Motor Maintenance and Repair Center in central Belgium. The EUR6 billion ($8.5bn) facility will be able to repair and refurbish more than 20 large motors and 10 pumps a year.

Hyperion Power Generation plans to build a small reactor manufacturing plant in the United Kingdom within the next two years. The firm says it plans to use the existing UK supply chain to build its 70MWt (27MWe), self-regulating reactor and that the UK will be its ‘launch pad’ for the European market.
