The International Energy Agency (IEA) in its latest report, Electricity 2024, dedicates a significant amount of space to nuclear power – a departure from its previous studies which treated it as peripheral. In its press release on the new report, IEA says the increase in electricity generation from renewables and nuclear "appears to be pushing the power sector's emissions into structural decline". Over the next three years, low-emissions generation is set to rise at twice the annual growth rate between 2018 and 2023. Global emissions from electricity generation are expected to decrease by 2.4% in 2024, followed by smaller declines in 2025 and 2026.

The US Department of Energy (DOE), through the National Reactor Innovation Centre (NRIC), has awarded $3.9m to Radiant, Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (UNSC) and Westinghouse to design experiments to test microreactor designs in the planned Demonstration of Microreactor Experiments (DOME) test bed at Idaho National Laboratory (INL).

Canada and Romania have signed a CAD3bn ($2.2bn) export development deal to support construction of two new units at the Cernavoda NPP. Canadian Energy Minister Jonathan Wilkinson said the financing offer for Romania’s national nuclear operator, Nuclearelectrica, to buy supplies or services from Canadian companies.

Steady Energy – which has been spun out from the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland – has raised €2m ($2.2m) in seed funding led by VTT, Yes VC and Lifeline Ventures. The company aims to build the world's first district heating plant based on its LDR-50 small modular reactor (SMR) by 2030. The new funding will be used for research and development work to demonstrate the functionality of the plant by building a 1:1 scale mock-up powered by electric heat.

An agreement has been signed by state-owned Polish utility Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ) with a consortium of US Westinghouse and Bechtel, which is being set up to design and build a NPP in Pomerania. The agreement, which sets out the rules for cooperation between PEJ and the Westinghouse-Bechtel consortium, is the result of intensive negotiations in recent months. These rules will apply to subsequent commercial contracts for the construction of a nuclear power plant in Pomerania.

The US has sensitive nuclear technology at a nuclear power plant inside Ukraine and is warning Russia not to touch it, according to a letter the US Department of Energy (DOE) sent to Rosatom, CNN reported. The letter, from the director of DOE’s Office of Nonproliferation Policy, Andrea Ferkile, was dated 17 March 2023. It tells Rosatom’s director general that the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Enerhodar “contains US-origin nuclear technical data that is export-controlled by the United States Government”.

US-based Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC) has signed an agreement with Polish chemical company Grupa Azoty Police and the West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin. Over the next six months, the parties will prepare a comprehensive research programme and jointly develop a plan for the construction, operation and maintenance of a nuclear energy research facility based on USNC’s Micro-Modular Reactor (MMR) technology.

The forum said six new nuclear power plants went online in 2022 and five units were permanently shut down.
The six new plants were Olkiluoto-3 in Finland, the first new reactor to start up in Western Europe in around 15 years, Fuqing-6 and Hongyanhe-6 in China, Kanupp-3 in Pakistan, Shin-Hanul-1 in South Korea and Barakah-3 in the United Arab Emirates.
