The Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) has published the second edition of its Small Modular Reactor Dashboard which tracks the progress of selected small modular reactor (SMR) designs towards deployment. NEA says the SMR designs are at various stages of development, from fundamental research on new concepts to commercial deployment and operation of mature designs.

A team led by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency has completed a series of large-scale demonstration tests to develop a new floating seismic isolation system (FSIS) for small modular reactors (SMRs) to support siting in areas of high seismicity. These followed almost a year of small-scale testing in co-operation with nuclear equipment supplier IHI Corporation and engineering company JGC holdings and a pre-application engagement with the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) which began in September 2023.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) in its latest report, Electricity 2024, dedicates a significant amount of space to nuclear power – a departure from its previous studies which treated it as peripheral. In its press release on the new report, IEA says the increase in electricity generation from renewables and nuclear "appears to be pushing the power sector's emissions into structural decline". Over the next three years, low-emissions generation is set to rise at twice the annual growth rate between 2018 and 2023. Global emissions from electricity generation are expected to decrease by 2.4% in 2024, followed by smaller declines in 2025 and 2026.

The US Export-Import Bank (EXIM) President & Chair Reta Jo Lewis has announced that EXIM has approved a resolution to fund applications for the export of US small modular reactor (SMR) systems and components. The announcement was made public in a White House fact sheet and at the UN climate change conference (COP28) in Dubai.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has released its annual outlook for nuclear power in the coming decades, increasing its global growth projections for a third year. IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi announced the new projections, contained in the 137-page annual report “Energy, Electricity and Nuclear Power Estimates for the Period up to 2050”, during the opening of the IAEA’s 2nd International Conference on Climate Change and the Role of Nuclear Power 2023: Atoms4NetZero in Vienna.
