The Bulgarian government has cancelled the decision to build the Belene NPP as a project of national importance and the procedure for selecting a strategic investor. “With today’s decision, the government instructs the Minister of Energy to take action to terminate the procedure announced by the National Electric Company (NEK) to select a strategic investor for the construction of the Belene nuclear power plant and notify the candidates who submitted the relevant offers,” a government statement said.

US-based Westinghouse Electric Company has signed a Front-End Engineering & Design (FEED) contract with Bulgaria’s Kozloduy NPP-Newbuild for a AP1000 reactor to be constructed at the Kozloduy NPP site. Westinghouse said work was starting to assess Bulgarian industry and existing infrastructure at the Kozloduy site for its potential to host an AP1000 reactor.

The US government has rejected Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power’s (KHNP’s) report on the tender for a nuclear power plant project in the Czech Republic. This has increased concerns that Korea’s plans to boost its nuclear reactor exports may continue to be stalled by ongoing litigation with Westinghouse Electric Company.

Unit 1 at China’s Sanmen NPP in Zhejiang province achieved first criticality on 21 June, according to China’s State Nuclear Power Technology Corp (SNPTC). The plant will be the first in the world to be based Westinghouse Electric’s AP1000 reactor design when it begins operation later this year. Westinghouse currently has six AP1000 nuclear power plants progressing through construction, testing and start-up – two units each at Sanmen, Haiyang NPP in China’s Shandong Province, and two units under construction at the Alvin W Vogtle NPP in Georgia, USA. Westinghouse, SNPTC and Shangdong Nuclear Power Co said that unit 1 at Haiyang began to load 157 fuel assemblies on 22 June after completing the necessary testing and regulatory reviews conducted by China’s National Nuclear Safety Administration (NNSA). Haiyang 1 is also expected to begin operation before the end of 2018.

The Westinghouse-designed AP1000 reactor at unit 1 of China’s Sanmen NPP in Zhejiang province is expected to reach criticality at the end of June and go into commercial operation by November, the official Science Daily reported on 12 June, citing Chen Hua, chairman of the China National Nuclear Power Corp (CNNP) .

Rusatom Automated Control Systems (Rasu), a subsidiary of Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, will be the main designer and supplier of the instrumentation and control systems (I&C) package for units 3 and 4 of India’s Kudankulam NPP, Rosatom said on 16 December. In November 2016, general contractor Atomstroyexport (part of Rosatom) signed a contract with Rasu to deliver the I&C equipment, a statement said. In April 2014, Russia and India signed a general framework agreement for the construction of Kudankulam 3 and 4, the second phase of the Kudankulam NPP in Tamil Nadu state. In November 2016, Rosatom said its subsidiary, Atomenergomash, began production of major components for the project.

AREVA, Westinghouse Electric Company and the Czech-Russian consortium MIR.1200 have all submitted bids for the supply of the Temeín Nuclear Power Plant units 3 &4 to Czech energy company CEZ. The envelopes with their bids will be opened on 3 July 2012 and the winning bidder is due to be announced in late 2013.
