The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has approved GE Vernova's nuclear fuel business to manufacture, ship and analyse the performance of nuclear fuel with uranium-235 enrichments of up to 8%.

The US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Idaho National Laboratory (INL) has received a shipment of used next-generation light water reactor LWR) fuel from a commercial NPP to support research and testing for the first time in two decades. INL said it had received 25 experimental fuel rods irradiated in the reactor core of a commercial reactor. The fuel rods were developed and manufactured by Westinghouse Electric Company with technical assistance from several US national laboratories, including INL.

US-based NAC International has received approval from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for its patented OPTIMUS-L packaging and transport system for High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) TRISO (TRI-structural ISOtropic) particle fuel, which will be used in advanced reactors. This is the first time NRC has licensed high-capacity packagings (more than 500 lb payload) for HALEU TRISO fuel in the US, paving the way for future licensing of NAC’s OPTIMUS systems to carry other HALEU contents.

An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Integrated Review Service for Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel Management, Decommissioning and Remediation (ARTEMIS) team of experts found that Belgium demonstrated commitment to the safe management of its radioactive waste and used fuel. The 11-day mission was carried out at the request of Belgium and hosted by ONDRAF/NIRAS, the Belgian National Agency for Radioactive Waste & Enriched Fissile Material management.

US-based Holtec International has launched a programme to build two SMR-300 reactor units at the Palisades NPP site in Michigan.
