Swedish nuclear technical services provider Studsvik has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Nordic energy company Fortum to explore the conditions for new nuclear at the Studsvik site near Nyköping in Sweden.

NorthStar Group Services has removed the Vallecitos boiling water reactor (VBWR) from the GEH Vallecitos Nuclear Centre in California and has delivered it for disposal to the Texas facility of its affiliate, Waste Control Specialists (WCS). The privately owned VBWR operated from 1957 to 1963 at the Vallecitos Nuclear Centre (VNC) in Alameda County some 48 km east of San Francisco. The VBWR was the first NPP to deliver significant quantities of electricity to a public utility grid and the first NPP to receive an operating licence issued by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).

Nearly 60 years after shutting down for the last time, the reactor vessel of the prototype boiling water reactor in California has been removed from its containment and shipped for final disposal by NorthStar Group Services, Inc.

ARC Clean Technology Supply Chain Manager, Anthony Jackman says the procurement process for long-lead items for the ARC-100 commercial demonstration unit at Canada’s Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station, such as the reactor vessel and intermediate heat exchangers, will begin in 2024. Contract awards are expected in the latter part of 2025 and the procurement schedule for other items will follow, he told “New Brunswick SMRs: A Collaborative Journey Towards Net Zero”. The meeting was a supply chain event for New Brunswick small modular reactor (SMR) industry leaders, government officials and experts hosted by Opportunities New Brunswick.

US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, at the Three Seas Initiative Summit in Bucharest, announced US actions “to further the role of new, secure, and safe nuclear technologies in accelerating the clean energy transition”. The US State Department said in a statement. “These actions expand on Romania’s leadership role in building the first small modular reactor (SMR) in Europe and in converting a former coal plant to advance nuclear energy”. The Three Seas Initiative, launched in 2016, includes Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Austria, Estonia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Latvia and Lithuania.

The UAE’s Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) and Poland’s Orlen Synthos Green Energy (OSGE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to co-operate in the development small modular reactors (SMRs). The MOU aims to provide an enabling framework for developing SMRs based on GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy’s BWRX-300 SMR technology in Poland and the UK, as well as within Central and Eastern Europe. ENEC and OSGE will work together to identify specific areas of mutual cooperation.

Proposals from the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia have been selected to receive US support for coal-to-small modular reactor (SMR) feasibility studies under Project Phoenix. The USA is also to set up a 'one-stop shop' to support countries in Europe and Eurasia that are approaching SMR deployment decisions.
