China has completed construction of the final batch of magnet-supporting products for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project under construction in France. The consignment has been shipped to the ITER construction site from Guangzhou City in Guangdong Province. China, as a partner in the project, is responsible for the development and manufacturing of the entire magnet supporting system for ITER.

Opening the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) 29th Fusion Energy Conference (FEC 2023) in London, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi began by wishing a happy 40th anniversary to the Joint European Torus (JET) which operates at Culham near Oxford. Jet was “the first tritium experiment in Europe, breaker of scientific records, producer of generations of accomplished scientists and engineers, and a true magnet for international collaboration,” he said.

China's new-generation tokamak, Huanliu-3 (HL-3), has made significant progress operating in high-confinement mode (H mode) under a plasma current of 1 million amperes for the first time, China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) announced. The experiment took place at CNNC’s Southwestern Institute of Physics (SWIP) in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. It is not clear whether this refers to the HL-2M tokamak, which was commissioned at SWIP in December 2020 as an upgrade of the earlier the HL-2A or whether this is a further upgrade.

The US DIII-D National Fusion Facility has completed a two-year research campaign, which included a record-breaking 1,600 hours of plasma research as part of 140 ground-breaking studies. The facility, is an Office of Science scientific user facility operated by General Atomics in San Diego for the Department of Energy (DOE). It will now begin a series of major upgrades over the next eight months to prepare for the next phase of research. These scheduled upgrades are intended to keep the facility at the forefront of fusion science as a valuable resource for the entire fusion community.
