NorthStar Group Services has removed the Vallecitos boiling water reactor (VBWR) from the GEH Vallecitos Nuclear Centre in California and has delivered it for disposal to the Texas facility of its affiliate, Waste Control Specialists (WCS). The privately owned VBWR operated from 1957 to 1963 at the Vallecitos Nuclear Centre (VNC) in Alameda County some 48 km east of San Francisco. The VBWR was the first NPP to deliver significant quantities of electricity to a public utility grid and the first NPP to receive an operating licence issued by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).

The Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management (OREM) and contractor UCOR (United Cleanup Oak Ridge) are now focusing on soil and groundwater remediation at the East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP), according to the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Environmental Management (EM). This is the final stage in a clean-up programme that has dismantled more than 500 ageing, contaminated structures.

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has accepted an application from X-Energy Reactor Company subsidiary, TRISO-X, for a fuel fabrication facility which will use high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU). Anticipating the decision, TRISO-X, in October, broke ground and began construction of the facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The TRISO-X Fuel Fabrication Facility (TF3) is expected to create more than 400 jobs and attract investment of approximately $300 million. TF3 is set to be commissioned and operational by 2025.

The Bulk Shielding Reactor - known as Building 3010 - is one of over a dozen research reactors built at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) since the 1950s, and is the first reactor at the Tennessee site to be demolished.

Work has begun on a protective enclosure for a former reactor on the US Department of Energy's Hanford site in Washington State. The K East Reactor is the seventh at the site to be placed in interim safe storage.
