International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, during the opening day of the 29th IAEA Fusion Energy Conference (FEC) in London, launched the World Fusion Outlook (WFO), a new regular publication providing authoritative information and updates on fusion energy. It is expected to become a global reference for energy R&D, technology development and prospective deployment of fusion.

The agency said it had signed the agreement, known as “practical arangements’, at its headquarters in Vienna this week. The document was conveyed to Bernard Bigot, Iter Organisation director-general, who signed it today at the Iter Council Session at Iter’s headquarters in St. Paul-lez-Durance, southern France. The arrangements “expand and deepen” a cooperation agreement from 2008, the IAEA said.
IAEA director-general Yukiya Amano noted the importance of the new arrangements. “The challenge to achieve the goal of fusion power production can only be met through concerted international efforts. Iter’s impressive work plays a central role in this field,” Mr Amano said. “We look forward to our intensified collaboration.”

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT’s) Alcator C-Mod tokamak nuclear fusion reactor on 30 September set a new world record for plasma pressure of 2.05 atmospheres. This is 16% better than the previous record of 1.77 atmospheres set at the same facility in 2005 at a temperature of 35m Celsius and lasting for two seconds. The breakthrough was presented on 17 September at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s fusion summit in Japan. Professor Robert McCrory of the University of Rochester, New York, said the result confirms that the high pressures required for burning plasma can be best achieved with high-magnetic-field tokamaks such as Alcator C-Mod.

The organisation overseeing construction of the estimated €15bn (about $16bn) International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (Iter) in southern France has agreed to look at the possibilities for expanding collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Possible areas of co-operation include knowledge management of new technology breakthroughs developed through Iter and global education initiatives in plasma physics and fusion technology. Since the late 1980s, the IAEA has provided a forum for collaboration among countries interested in demonstrating the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion energy and in 2007, the Iter International Fusion Energy Organisation was set up The IAEA director-general is the depositary for the Iter agreement, under which scientists are building the Iter experimental reactor at Cadarache in the csouth of France.

The UK Department of Energy & Climate Change has a problem with the world’s largest stocks of reactor-grade plutonium. The international association Environmentalists for Nuclear Energy view this as a one-time opportunity to benefit several advanced nuclear energy developments, none of which are acknowledged by DECC. By Brendan McNamara
Weak, short distance radiation makes it warm; so it is safe to hold but not to swallow. UK reactor grade plutonium is unsuitable for making weapons. And small-scale uses of UK plutonium could never go critical
