Uzbekistan's preparations to build its first nuclear power plant are gathering pace with a sense of making up for lost time. The Central Asian country became a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as long ago as 1994, has 50 years of experience in nuclear research and is the world's fifth biggest producer of uranium.

GE Steam Power expects "stable demand" for nuclear power generation over the next 10 years as "the only powerful source of electricity without carbon dioxide emissions", its CEO, Michael Keroullé, said in an interview this week with Strana Rosatom, the newspaper of the Russian state nuclear corporation.

Russia’s Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said on 18 October that the Russian Finance Ministry may use the National Wealth Fund (NWF) to lend money for the construction of Egypt’s El Dabaa nuclear plant, starting from 2020 or 2021. He said Russia would provide finance for the project $3-4 billion a year.

Egypt plans to build a second NPP on the Mediterranean coast. Egypt’s Nuclear Power Plants Authority (ENPPA) and international consulting firm Worley Parsons will conduct detailed research work in the area of al-Nagilya on the Mediterranean coast for the construction of a second NPP Egyptian, economic newspaper Al-Bursa reported, citing a source in the government.

Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom in 2016 will contribute RUB24.6m ($300,000) from its state budget allocation to the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA's) International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO project), according to a Russian government directive published on the official legal information portal. The directive says Rosatom and the Russian Foreign Ministry will monitor the use of the Russian contribution.
