Iraq is working on a plan to build nuclear reactors in face of widespread blackouts that have sparked social unrest, Bloomberg reported on 8 June. Despite being OPEC’s second biggest oil producer, Iraq is suffering from power shortages and insufficient investment in ageing plants, and needs to meet an expected 50% jump in demand by the end of the decade. Building NPPs could help to close the supply gap.

Russia’s Lepse floating technical base (PTB) in the Murmansk Region will be sealed and transferred for long-term storage to the village of Sayda Guba, where a long-term ground storage facility for reactor compartments is located, Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom has announced.

Making a commitment to build six new EPRs in France would be an "effective stimulus" for the country's economy as it recovers in the years ahead from the shock of COVID-19, the French nuclear energy society (SFEN) wrote in a position paper published this week. Nuclear energy "ticks all three boxes" highlighted in the debate about the recovery - that investments should be in low-carbon, resilient and sovereign industries, it said.

Russia’s Mayak PA reprocessing plant in the southern Urals region (part of state nuclear corporation Rosatom) is the most likely source of a release of ruthenium-106 detected across Europe in late 2017, according to a study led by Olivier Masson from France's Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety.

A used fuel reprocessing plant in the southern Urals region of Russia is the most likely source of a release of the isotope ruthenium-106 detected across Europe in late 2017, a study has concluded. No incident has, however, been reported at the Mayak facility or any other Russian nuclear facility and Rosatom has always maintained this.

The first shipment of used nuclear fuel left the former naval base in Andreeva Bay in northwestern Russia on 27 June. Under an international initiative financed by the Nuclear Window of the Northern Dimension Environmental Partnership (NDEP) more than 22,000 used fuel assemblies from nuclear submarines, currently stored at Andreeva Bay, will be retrieved, packaged and removed from the site. The process is being carried out by SevRAO, part of Russian state nuclear energy corporation, Rosatom.

Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom in 2016 will contribute RUB24.6m ($300,000) from its state budget allocation to the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA's) International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO project), according to a Russian government directive published on the official legal information portal. The directive says Rosatom and the Russian Foreign Ministry will monitor the use of the Russian contribution.

Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation (Rosatom) and the government of Russian republic Yakutia have signed an agreement for executing investment projects to develop the Elkon uranium area. As per the agreement, Rosatom will construct a uranium mining and processing combine in Yakutia and build four floating nuclear power plants (NPP) for supplying the northern regions of the republic with heat and electricity.
