According to a leaked draft of the bloc’s taxonomy proposals, nuclear will be treated differently to renewables, as a transitional activity, Foratom said. Furthermore, “sunset clauses”, so-called because they have time limits, have been introduced for existing plants and new build projects. Foratom said in a statement on Tuesday: “We do not believe this is the right approach.”
The sunset clauses say that to be taxonomy compliant, nuclear new build projects must receive a construction permit by 2045. For lifetime extensions, the extension must be authorised by the member state by 2040.
Renewables do not have to meet any similar clauses, nor do they have to meet other rules applied to “transitional” nuclear. Those rules include that nuclear does not hamper the development and deployment of low-carbon alternatives and does not lead to a “lock-in” of carbon-intensive assets. Lock-in occurs when carbon intensive systems perpetuate, delay or prevent the transition to low-carbon alternatives.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said on 18 August that Iran’s nuclear programme and activities were fully in line with the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and its Safeguards commitments. Khatibzadeh noted in a statement that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been supervising Iran’s nuclear activities and that Tehran had notified the IAEA of its measures in advance.

The OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) on 18 July released a new study, “Ensuring the Adequacy of Funding Arrangements for Decommissioning and Radioactive Waste Management”. The 239-page document comprises a conceptual framework, 12 detailed country case studies on funding arrangements prepared in collaboration with NEA countries, and some best policy guidelines. It focuses on the interdependence of costs and funding requirements and changes in nuclear policy, such as long-term operation or premature shutdowns, as well as technological progress.

Honeywell is temporarily to suspend uranium hexafluoride (UF6) production at its Metropolis, Illinois plant pending an improvement in business conditions, the company announced yesterday. The USA's only uranium conversion plant has been in a scheduled outage since October.
