Countries around the world turned to nuclear as a reliable low-carbon energy source as they looked for ways to wean themselves off Russian imports and lower carbon emissions.
New plants began operating, deals for small modular reactors were signed and countries announced ambitious plans for new-build.
On the political front, US president Joe Biden signed into law new legislation that will help to finance struggling nuclear reactors and could save dozens from being shut down early. In Europe, the nuclear industry celebrated when members of the European parliament decided to “follow the science” and support legislation which includes nuclear in the bloc’s sustainable finance taxonomy for green investment.

The nuclear industry has merely scratched the surface of the flexible benefits of nuclear power, according to panellists in a conference held this week ahead of the 11th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM11). The CEM11 side-event, Flexibility in Clean Energy Systems: The Enabling Roles of Nuclear Energy, included high-level speakers from the International Energy Agency (IEA), the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as well as government officials from Canada, the UK and the USA. Hosted by Saudi Arabia, CEM11 will take place on 22 September.

Hitachi announced today it will end its business operations on the Wylfa Newydd nuclear power plant construction project, which it had suspended in January 2019 "because it was clear that further time was needed to decide on a financing structure". Horizon Nuclear Power, the UK project developer that Hitachi acquired in November 2012, said it will now take steps for the "orderly closing down" of all its current development activities, but will "keep the lines of communication open" with government and other key stakeholders regarding future options at both its sites, which in addition to Wylfa Newydd on Anglesey, include Oldbury on Severn in South Gloucestershire.

A group of French companies on 17 September, during the International Atomic Energy Agency General Conference in Vienna, announced a joint project, Nuward, aimed at the development of a small modular reactor (SMR) to meet the growing world demand for decarbonised, safe and competitive electricity generation.

Canadian investment fund Brookfield (Brookfield Business Partners with institutional partners) said on 4 January that it is to acquire 100% of Westinghouse Electric Company from Toshiba Corporation for about $4.6bn. Westinghouse filed with the US courts for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March 2017 in the face of severe financial difficulties.

The UK intends to leave the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom), according to explanatory notes to a bill the government published yesterday authorising Brexit. The notes state the bill empowers the prime minister to leave both the European Union and Euratom.

The UK Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) expects to complete the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) process for Hitachi-GE's UK Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (UK ABWR) in December 2017 as scheduled, but said in its latest quarterly report that the GDA for the Westinghouse AP1000 is unlikely to be completed by the previously expected date of March. ONR also said it had met "a number of times" in the reporting period with General Nuclear Systems as the potential GDA Requesting Party (RP) for China General Nuclear's HPR1000 design.

AREVA, Westinghouse Electric Company and the Czech-Russian consortium MIR.1200 have all submitted bids for the supply of the Temeín Nuclear Power Plant units 3 &4 to Czech energy company CEZ. The envelopes with their bids will be opened on 3 July 2012 and the winning bidder is due to be announced in late 2013.
