A digital control system (DCS) is being installed at the ACP2100 small modular reactor (SMR) demonstration project, also known as the Linglong One, at the Changjiang site in Hainan province. China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) said the first DCS has been put in place allowing installation and debugging work to begin.

A new publication in the IAEA’s Technical Report Series, Status of Molten Salt Reactor Technology, outlines the current status of molten salt reactor (MSR) technology around the world. It reviews the history of MSRs and takes a look at the current research and development activities taking place. The advantages of this technology, including a smaller high level waste footprint and passive safety features, as well as some of the technical challenges, such as developing components capable of operating in very high temperature environments, are detailed.

The Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) has published the second edition of its Small Modular Reactor Dashboard which tracks the progress of selected small modular reactor (SMR) designs towards deployment. NEA says the SMR designs are at various stages of development, from fundamental research on new concepts to commercial deployment and operation of mature designs.

The US has awarded Slovenia consultancy and technical services under the Phoenix Project to support the transition from coal to small modular nuclear reactors (SMR). The decision came in a letter from US Assistant Secretary of State (International Security & Non-Proliferation) CS Eliot Kang delivered by US Ambassador to Slovenia Jamie Lindler Harpootlian to Tina Seršen, State Secretary at Slovenia’s Ministry of the Environment, Climate & Energy.

China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) said the outer containment dome has been installed at the ACP-100 small modular reactor (SMR) demonstration project at the Changjiang NPP in Hainan Province. The multi-purpose 125 MWe SMR (also known as Linglong One) is a pressurised water reactor designed for electricity generation, urban heating, urban cooling, industrial steam production, or seawater desalination.
